Prowave Hair Removal

What is Cutera ProWave
  • The Cutera ProWave is a light-based hair-removal system (not a simple razor or wax), built to offer long-term or permanent hair reduction rather than temporary hair removal.

  • It uses a specially tailored broad-spectrum light (infrared wavelengths ~ 770–1100 nm) to target hair follicles.

  • The handpiece can adjust its wavelength / pulse parameters to best suit different skin types and hair characteristics.

How It Works
  • The device emits light that’s absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in hair follicles especially effective when hair is in the growth phase (anagen). That energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle and impairing its ability to regrow hair.

  • Because only follicles with enough pigment absorb the energy, not all hairs are removed in one session typically multiple treatments are needed.

  • The ProWave handpiece offers “wavelength flexibility,” meaning the operator selects among different wavelength/pulse-width “programs” to optimize treatment for a person’s skin type and hair.

Where It Can Be Used

ProWave can be used on many body areas (face, legs, arms, underarms, back, bikini, etc.) and is suited to people looking for longer-lasting hair reduction vs. temporary hair removal methods.

Advantages

  • Treats relatively large areas fairly quickly (e.g. large skin surfaces) thanks to broad-spectrum + adaptable settings.

  • Adjustable for different skin and hair types (though most effective when hair has enough pigment).

  • Typically fairly tolerable. Many clinics report only mild “pinching or stinging” during pulses; no or minimal pain.

 What to Know / Limitations

  • Because only hair in certain growth phases can be affected, multiple sessions are required to catch all hairs. Usually a series of treatments spaced out over time.

  • Results vary depending on hair color, thickness, and skin type. Lighter or finer hair and hair not in the right growth phase may respond less effectively.

  • After treatment, some common (usually mild) side effects: temporary redness or swelling, similar to a sun-burn sensation. Rarely blistering if skin is sensitive or after-care not followed properly.

  • As with all light-based hair reduction, no guarantee of 100% permanent hair removal “permanent hair reduction” means hair density and thickness will significantly diminish, but a small amount might regrow over time.

Typical Treatment Course
  • Sessions often spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

  • Many people need around 3–6 sessions, depending on area treated, hair thickness, and desired results.

  • Each session duration depends on area from a few minutes (small area) to ~1 hour (large area).
